Social enterprise development initiatives launched

Attention: open in a new window. Print

Earlier today we were delighted to be a part of two exciting new initiatives – the opening of the SERVICE ONE Social Enterprise Hub at the University of Canberra as well as launching the inaugural season of the Mill House Social Enterprise Accelerator program.

The Mill House is a three-month, capacity building program designed to accelerate the business growth and impact of social ventures. It will be operating out of the SERVICE ONE Social Enterprise Hub – a dedicated space where social enterprises can collaborate, refine business plans and access specialist advice.

Six local social enterprises are part of season one of the Mill House Social Enterprise Accelerator refine program including Brunswick Solutions, Energy Panda, For the Love of Bikes, Kulture Break, Paperboy Marketing and Rebus Theatre. They will commence with the Mill House on 10 July and work through the program until the end of September. SERVICE ONE Chief Executive, Matthew Smith, elaborated on what these social enterprises can expect as well as the importance of nurturing this sector.

"More and more, consumers want to deal with companies that have a strong social conscious. Social enterprises exist to do just that – to have a meaningful and positive societal or environmental impact for a commercial return so they can be sustainable. As a social enterprise ourselves, SERVICE ONE has a vested interested in seeing this sector grow and flourish in the region and the Mill House is designed to do just that. These social enterprises will be guided by our Social Impact Strategist, Cindy Mitchell – a passionate advocate for social enterprise and the broader social impact investment movement, and I know she will be able to make a big difference to these social ventures," Mr Smith said.

The SERVICE ONE Social Enterprise Hub and Mill House Social Enterprise Accelerator program are a result of a collaboration between several organisations.

"Up until this point, social enterprise support services have only been available in the larger capital cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. Thanks to our work with the University of Canberra and CBR Innovation Network, local social enterprises and entrepreneurs can now turn to the Mill House for support."
