Mill House season two accelerator commencing soon

The Mill House is all about assisting for-purpose entrepreneurs in Canberra and the surrounding region and season two of their accelerator program will be commencing soon.

The Mill House is a joint initiative of SERVICE ONE, the University of Canberra and Canberra Innovation Network and has finalised participants for the GRIST accelerator program that will kick off later this month. Close to 30 social enterprises and entrepreneurs across three different streams will go through the next accelerator program, where they will have access to mentors and work on developing mission and problem statements, articulating their unique value propositions, developing initial marketing and sales channels, delivering a viable product and networking to meet people who can join Boards and management teams (and much more).

The season two cohort is an incredible line up of for-purpose social ventures, aiming to:

  • reduce the stress of transitioning to aged care
  • provide guidance to access in-home care services
  • push demand for quality eco-friendly products
  • digitally transform NDIS provider businesses
  • enable companion dogs to become qualified Psychiatric Assistance Dogs
  • make available quality health services to those in need regardless of race, ethnicity, class, gender or culture
  • change young Australians’ relationship with alcohol by providing a distilled, non-alcoholic spirit alternative and encouraging a change in drinking behaviour
  • provide all natural skin care solutions
  • increase the prominence of, and access to, Indian street food
  • exposing more Australians to the joy of sharing home-baked goods with family and friends conveniently
  • providing affordable interior design using recycled/upcycled materials
  • empower women of all ages to create expressive and original work in music and live performances
  • produce digital stories to reveal hidden narratives of women and gay culture
  • provide children with access to sports after school programs
  • assist cafes and restaurants that may like to use art to attract customers and connect locally
  • address the gender gap in the building industry by providing specialised programs targeting women and children
  • provide judgement-free decluttering services
  • unite donators with charities and improve the overall experience
  • showcase the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef
  • deliver clean and reliable clean energy in a commercially-viable and equitable way
  • support the health and wellbeing of front-line workers at risk of developing Vicarious Trauma, and
  • provide opportunities for people on low incomes to access affordable and comfortable housing within a supportive community.

SERVICE ONE Chief Executive, Matthew Smith, shared some of his hopes for the next Mill House accelerator cohort.

“We wish all of these social ventures all the best in their Mill House journey. Social enterprises and ventures is still a developing category but to see such strong interest in season two of the Mill House accelerator program with so many forward-thinking individuals wanting to make a positive societal difference is refreshing. As SERVICE ONE is a social enterprise, we’re passionate about helping to develop and nurture, other like-minded businesses and we’re proud of our involvement with the Mill House.

“With the assistance of our Social Impact Strategist Cindy Mitchell, we’re confident they will find the process rewarding and we look forward to seeing their progress in the months to come, and certainly the positive difference they will make in our community,” Mr Smith said.

Mill House operating out of SERVICE ONE Head Office

Previously based at the University of Canberra campus, the Mill House will be operating out of SERVICE ONE’s Head Office at Deakin for the remainder of 2018, including season two of the accelerator program. This includes office space and a versatile event space for networking, forums and workshops. We also welcome Yerra to the space. Headed by ACT Australian of the Year 2018, Dion Devow, Yerra is committed to the sustainable establishment and growth of small and medium Indigenous businesses through the provision of ICT solutions.

Do Good Award winners announced

Congratulations to the two Do Good Award winners, Sean Thornton (Circle Alliance Bank), who established Anonymous X – a program that supports individuals experiencing homelessness AND Jacqui Bennett (AWA Alliance Bank), who founded Humans in Geelong – a website that shares positive stories to inspire others to Do Good. Thank you to both winners for doing good in the community! Both winners will enjoy either accommodation and dinner for two in their closest capital city OR a gift certificate to the value of $750.

Thank you to everyone who nominated themselves or someone else for a Do Good Award, we had some fantastic nominations. And a special thank you to SERVICE ONE’s finalists, Ethel and Mark for their great work in the community.
